1-26-23 Alert

Good Afternoon, New Mexico Activists:

There are three hearings tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 27: HB 140 Tribal Education Trust Fund, two tax reform bills, and two housing reform bills. Please act on these today if you can. We wish we could give you more notice, but things are starting to get fast and furious at the Roundhouse!

On Fri., Jan. 27, 8:30 a.m., Rm. 309, the House Education Committee will hear HB 140 Tribal Education Trust Fund. It’s time to give Native American education the funding it needs and deserves. We have failed our Native American students for generations. You’ll find talking points at the link the bill title above. Please email and call committee members today to urge them to vote “YES” on HB 140.

If you’d like to offer public comment, you can attend the hearing in person or join the Zoom at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82501768249. Or One tap mobile US: +17193594580, 82501768249# or +12532050468, 82501768249. Webinar ID: 825 0176 8249. Or you can watch the hearing via Webcast at this link.

NOTE: five minutes after this Alert was sent, we were notified that Rep. Chandler will hold HB 119 and HB 120 for a later hearing. Feel free to contact HTRC members, but know that the bills won’t be heard on 1/27/23.
On Fri., Jan. 27, 8:30 a.m., Rm. 317, the House Taxation & Revenue Committee will hear HB 119 Income Tax Bracket Changes and HB 120 Limit Capital Gains Tax Deduction. Both of these bills make progress on reforming our regressive tax system that favors the wealthy and burdens working people. Read the talking points about both HB 119 and HB 120 at this link. You can also read the general talking points about why we tax reform in our state here. Please email and call committee members this afternoon or early Friday morning to urge them to vote “YES” on HB 199 and HB 120.

To offer public comment, you must either be present at the hearing, or join the Zoom. No Zoom info is posted as of this afternoon, but I spoke to an assistant in Rep. Lente’s office today who said the Zoom link will be posted tomorrow morning. (Why in the world can’t they post it today?!) So if you want to join the Zoom, tomorrow morning you’ll need to go to “What’s Happening” at the legislative website at this link. Then select “House Committee Schedule PDF” and scroll down to the Tax & Revenue Committee agenda near the bottom, where, I hope, you’ll find the Zoom link. You can always watch via Webcast at this link, but you can’t comment or otherwise interact.

On Fri., Jan 27, 1:30 p.m. (or ½ hr. after floor session ends), Rm. 311, the Senate Health & Public Affairs Committee will hear SB 99 Rent Control Prohibitions and SB 140 NM Housing Trust Fund. SB 99 lifts the statewide prohibition on rent control and leaves it up to local municipalities to decide. You’ll find talking points at the link in the title of SB 99 above. We don’t have talking points ready for SB 140, but this bill appropriates $48 million from the General Fund to the New Mexico Housing Trust Fund. With an affordable housing crisis across our state, we need all the funding we can get for affordable housing projects. Please call and email committee members today or tomorrow morning to urge them to vote “YES” on SB 99 and SB 140.

To make public comment, attend the hearing in person or via Zoom at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9124526531. Or join the Zoom via telephone at 1 253 215 8782. Meeting ID: 912 452 6531. As always, you have the option of watching the hearing via Webcast at this link.
