Four-Step Strategy to Get Out the Vote

October 28 Urgent Update. It is impossible to overstate the importance of the November election. Well, despite the polls showing Biden with a very significant lead, the election remains very much in doubt because of the very real possibility that Trump and the Supreme Court will invalidate any votes not counted on Nov. 3. Click here to read our post covering how the GOP is plotting to ask the Supreme Court to do just that: no votes counted after Nov 3.

Our GOTV strategy had originally tried to respect the need to vote safely, but given the above, it is now time to ask all those who have not voted yet to vote in person on Nov 3. And now, we need to do all we can to reach out not just those friends and family who you know will vote, if reminded enough, and now also include people who may not typically vote. We need everyone voting on Nov. 3.

Retake Our Democracy wants to make it VERY easy for you to be effectively engaged, and just as important, for you to motivate others to take part in our very simple four-step strategy. Success depends on how many of you faithfully execute at least the first three steps.

You can accomplish the first two steps in five minutes. The third involves likely an hour but has potential for an exponential impact on the election. The fourth is for users of social media and requires just a few minutes. When done, you will have reached hundreds of people who will then each reach hundreds more, etc. Here’s what we all need to do:

  1. VERIFY YOU ARE STILL REGISTERED TO VOTE: Millions of voters have been purged from the voter roles and don’t know it. So everyone should verify they are still registered. For New Mexicans, click here. For all those outside NM, click here to get to the national Secretary of State website, find your state, click, and confirm your registration.
  2. IF IT CAN BE DONE SAFELY, MAKE A PLAN TO USE EARLY VOTING TO VOTE IN PERSON & AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, BUT IF EARLY VOTING IS NOT ALLOWED IN YOUR STATE or IF YOU ARE NOT ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN YOU WILL VOTE EARLY, PLEASE MAKE A PLAN TO VOTE IN PERSON ON NOV. 3. We provide links to help you ascertain the rules in your state, but different counties implement state policy differently, so it is important to check with your county clerk, as well. If your state doesn’t allow early voting, vote IN PERSON IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN. By voting in person & early, you KNOW your ballot will be counted the night of the election. Axios posted the guidelines for every state’s mail and early voting procedures. Click here. Once you’ve identified your state’s procedures. Another reason to vote early, in person, is that in most states counting mail-in ballots won’t begin until the day after the election. If a very high proportion of Democrat voters cast their ballots by mail, it would be very possible that Trump could be leading on the morning of Nov 4, and you can bet GOP rhetoric will be that he has won the legitimate vote and that the fake mail-in ballots are not legitimate. We need a landslide folks and we need it Nov 3. So vote in person and early if you can do so safely. Otherwise get your mail in ballot mailed as early as possible.
  3. TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. This is the most important step by far and takes just a bit more time. Start by combing through your personal email address book. Then send the note below (or one like it) to groups of ten friends at a time. Please don’t send it in one email to 50+ people or it could wind up in SPAM. James Stewart (not the deceased actor, but a local Retake supporter) gave us the idea for this strategy and kicked off his personal effort with emails to 150 friends. So think big. THINK VERY BIG.
  4. USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO SHARE THIS PAGE. Use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or any other social media platform to post a link to this page. Add a personal message about how important it is to reach out to others to ensure that everyone votes in this election. Everyone. If everyone votes, we win. If you use FB, also “tag” up to 50 friends (that is the limit allowed) and ask everyone reading the post, to share it with their friends.
  5. WRITE TO YOUR FRIENDS TOMOMRROW AND REMIND THEM TO SEND THE EMAIL AND THIS LINK TO 20-30-100 OF THEIR FRIENDS AND IF THEY DID THAT ALREADY, ASK THEM TO THEN REWRITE TO THEM AND REMIND THEM TO SEND THE POST ON TO THEIR FRIENDS. KEEP AT IT UNTIL NOV. 3.

Email Language You Can Use
Of course you can write your own, but we said we wanted to make this simple, so here is a starting point. We repeat the four-step strategy in the note below because if you ask people to click to get to the strategy, many will not click. You will likely get more friends to do this if you write your own intro and closing and insert our strategy:

Dear Friends/Family,

Forgive the form note, but I am sending this to [#] friends, family members, colleagues and other personal connections, virtually everyone I know. The future of our country and life on our planet are hanging in the balance in the November election and each of us simply must do all we can to ensure we don’t just win this election, but that we create a landslide of historic proportion. Trump will do all he can to discredit this election; we need to make sure the results are irrefutable.

Retake Our Democracy is a New Mexico-based non-profit that has created a simple four-step GET OUT THE VOTE strategy. I am following it to a tee and I hope you will too. It is easy, will only take you a few minutes, and has the potential to significantly impact races across the nation.

You can accomplish the first two steps in less than five minutes. The third may take an hour, but it has immense potential for an exponential impact on the election. Read on.

STEP ONE: VERIFY YOU ARE STILL REGISTERED TO VOTE: Millions have been purged from the voter roles and don’t know it. So everyone should verify they are still registered. For New Mexicans, click here . For all those outside NM, click here to get to the national Secretary of State website, find your state, click, and confirm registration.

STEP TWO: IF IT CAN BE DONE SAFELY, MAKE A PLAN TO USE EARLY VOTING TO VOTE IN PERSON & AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE But at this point, if you can’t vote early, please, please, please don a mask, socially distance and vote in person. If your state doesn’t allow early voting, If you can’t vote early, please make a plan to vote safely and in person on Nov. 3.

STEP THREE: TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. This is the most important step by far and takes just a bit more time. Start by combing through your personal email address book. Then send the note below to groups of ten friends at a time. Please don’t send it in one email to 50+ people or it could wind up in SPAM. James Stewart (not the deceased actor, but a local Retake supporter) gave us the idea for this strategy and kicked off his personal effort with emails to 150 friends. So think big.

STEP FOUR: USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO SHARE THIS PAGE.

STEP FIVE: WRITE TO YOUR FRIENDS EVERY DAY UP TO AND INCLUDING nOV 3. WE CAN’T LEAVE ANY STONE UNTURNED.

When you have completed steps 1-4, please return to the bottom of the Retake Get Out the Vote page and “comment,” telling us very briefly what you did and how many folks you reached.

So much is at stake, please follow these four steps. When you’re done, return to this page and comment below to tell us how many people you reached out to and maybe a word or two about how easy it was. That’s all.

Thank you,

[Your Name]

That’s all there is to it. Use our letter or write your own. You can finish this in less than an hour unless you have hundreds to send this to. But even then it will be easy.

Come back to Retake Our Democracy and check out our Election Page periodically, as we are developing a whole series of easy ways to ensure that Nov. 3 ends this tyranny and on January 21 hope is restored to America.

Let’s Do This

  1. I wrote my own letter and sent it with my own illustrations (one of which I sent to your email yesterday, Paul). I sent it to 74 people, 10 at a time. I have already sent my application for a mail-in ballot. Although the website for the County Clerk says the applications are not available yet, if you call, they will send. I do not have a smart phone or fb page. Thanks for the task. I needed something to fend off my nervousness about Nov. 3

  2. I used the letter with just a few edits. Sent it out to 120 folks in batches of 10. I worked on the whole project for two hours. It was time well spent, for sure. I had the sense that I was doing something that might, just might, be helpful. I have heard back from a couple of people already and they are now sending out the letter to their ‘select list’ of contacts. Like Chrysa, I left my name and number with County Clerk’s Office for an Absentee Ballot. Will also keep checking back to see when the website shows applications are available. Thanks for getting us going on this task, Paul and Roxanne. Good to have a bit of hope in the air!

  3. Hi Paul and Roxanne, I’ve sent this to 45 people so far and posted in the INH newsletter which has 807 subscribers. Tx for doing this!!! Melora Palmer

  4. Didn’t take too long to send a personal paragraph along with Paul’s letter and the link to 104 people, 10 at a time and a post on FB with 50 tagged friends.

  5. It feels GOOD to be so united and on fire. Thank YOU for creating a way that made this so easy. I sent this out to 74 people with a personal note.

  6. I sent out the letter to 85 people and posted it on my Facebook page. Lots of responses already that people we contacted plan to send the same letter to their friends & family.

  7. Personally, I think people should still apply for an absentee ballot, either on nmvote.org (we’re told the online absentee ballot application should be up soon, so check each day) or by calling the county clerk. While absentee ballots won’t be mailed until the first week in October, that’s probably enough time to receive them, even with a badly degraded postal service. The key is not to mail the competed ballot, but rather to drop it off in the boxes at early voting locations and the county clerk’s office. And if the ballot isn’t received in time, you can still vote early by declaring that the absentee ballot wasn’t received. The problem with encouraging everyone to vote early is that without a large number of people voting absentee, like in the primary, the early voting locations will be crowded, and we’re back to unsafe voting, with long lineups, etc.

  8. I sent it out to about 75 people via email.

  9. I sent to 20 people via email, and direct texted this page to a few others.
