It Is the US vs. the World as Trump to Announce Exit from Paris Accord and…

This post reviews Trump’s petulant trip to Europe, the reaction of European leaders and now word that Trump plans to fully isolate the US and exit the Paris Accord. Also, a Democracy Now report with an interview that points to signs of advancing tyranny and how we need to face it down. Now. Finally, details on a gentrification book club event in July.

Trump Further Isolates Us from the Free World. I am not a huge fan of trends in Europe, but Trump’s arrogance in Europe from his shoving other world leaders out of the way so he could be front and center to his petulant behavior with other leaders of the free world spell the further isolation of the US from those who have been our historic allies. Click here for an insightful New Republic report. From German President Merkel, “The times when we could fully rely on others are to some extent over—I experienced that in the last few days,” Merkel declared, speaking at a Bavarian rally. “We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands.”  From the New Republic: “Never has Europe’s leadership been so brazenly dismissive of an American president in the post-war era. In the 1960s, even when Charles de Gaulle disagreed with American intervention in Vietnam, he couched his dissent in respectful terms. How has it come to this?”  And from a White House official on Air Force One: “I’ll just implore you all, whether you’re talking about our successes on trade and migration in the G-7 or summit in Saudi Arabia, to tell the story back home about what an unprecedentedly and historically successful trip this was by an incredible leader and an amazing man who has done extraordinary things in a very short time for the country he loves and the people of America that he serves so faithfully.” And this morning, breaking news that Trump intends to announce our exit from the Paris Accords. For more on how our country’s inching toward tyranny….see the next report.

DemocracyNow Presents an Interview with Timothy Snyder, Yale Historian, whose book On Tyranny is # on the NY Times bestseller list. His interview yesterday on Democracy Now yesterday is very insightful about the likely ways in which Trump will advance his concentration of power, the signs of a tipping point toward tyranny and what all of us need to do to prepare for and prevent that tipping point. This is a very insightful report.  Click here for the report and to watch the video.

Book Club on How to Kill a City, July 6, 6:30pm-8:30pm, Center for Progress & Justice, 1420 Cerrillos Rd., A potluck open discussion of How to Kill a City and gentrification nationally and in Santa Fe.  This is a compelling book that is not without criticism. What I found compelling about it was that rather rely solely on data and statistics, the author focused on the human face of gentrification, the people in four cities: Detroit, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco who contributed to and fostered the gentrification and who suffered from it. Over the next month, i will assemble a few articles as supplementary reading, but How to Kill a City is a very readable piece. I highly recommend calling Collective Works (505) 988-4226) to buy it there. Amazon doesn’t need your business, our local bookseller does. I will be calling Collected Works this morning to alert them and to order a supply.
