2-26-23 Alert

Good Sunday Afternoon, New Mexico Activists:

We have three new hearings on Monday and Tuesday to tell you about and four bills on the House Floor. Join our Zoom Huddle, Weds. March 1, at 6 p.m. So much to talk about! Register at this link.

NEW: On Mon. Feb. 27, 8:30 a.m., Room 321, Senate Rules will hear HB 4 Voting Rights Protections. HB 4 passed the House Floor last week 41:26, basically along party lines. Let’s get this moving so we don’t run out of time like we did last year! HB 4 would establish automatic voter registration with an option to opt out, create a volunteer permanent absentee voter list, reinstate voting rights for felons as soon as they are released, make vote-by-mail more accessible, protect voting access for Native American communities, make Election Day a state holiday, and more. Please email committee members today to urge them to vote “YES” on HB 4.

Offer public comment in person or join the Zoom here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81944191844. Or Zoom via telephone at 1 669 900 9128. Meeting ID: 819 4419 1844. Send written comments or register to speak using zoom, by email to SRC.zoom@nmlegis.gov. Or watch the Webcast at this link.

NEW: On Mon. Feb. 27, 1:30 p.m., Room 307, House Appropriations & Finance will hear HB 264 Study Medicaid Managed Care Structure. The Medicaid Managed Care program accounts for 80% of Medicaid spending in our state. Current strategies to address rising costs are unacceptable: they focus on cutting the number of enrollees, reducing benefits, and lowering provider payment rates. We cannot rely on federal dollars or oil and gas revenue to cover rising costs. HB 264 appropriates $250K to study this structure and find solutions. It will, in part, lay the groundwork to pass the Health Security Act in a future session. Please email committee members today, and call them in the morning, to urge them to vote “YES” on HB 264.

NEW: On Tues., Feb. 28, 8 a.m., Room 317, House Energy, Environment & Natural Resources will hear HB 12 Advanced Energy Technology Act, which was held over from Saturday and which we strongly oppose. The bill includes “carbon capture and sequestration” (CCS) in the definition of advanced energy technology. CCS, which has never worked anywhere in the world, is at the heart of all dirty hydrogen production. The bill also includes nuclear energy in the definition of advanced energy technology. Please read the talking points at the link in the bill title above. And if you’d like more information, please follow this link to read Paul’s Feb. 23 blog, “Hell No to HB 12, the 2023 Version of Hydra Hydrogen!” If you haven’t already, please call and email committee members to urge them to vote “NO” on HB 12.

If you can come to the hearing in person, please do – we want to pack the hearing room to let Reps. know we OPPOSE this bill. You can offer public comment in person at the hearing or via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82140964843. Or Zoom via phone: +17193594580, 82140964843# or +12532050468, 82140964843#.
