2-1-22 Alert

Greetings New Mexico Activists:

First, we encourage you to join our Legislative Strategy Huddle via Zoom tomorrow, Weds., Feb. 2, 6-7 p.m. Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day, but we promise the meeting won’t be repetitive and bewildering! We’ll have Miranda Viscoli, Co-President of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, to discuss gun violence prevention bills, in particular HB 9 Unlawful Access to Firearm by Minor, which looks good on the surface but is a deeply flawed bill that we hope will be amended. We’ll also discuss other important bills and get input from participants about their experiences so far during this 2022 Legislative Session. Register for the Huddle at this link.

After the big rush to get information to you Monday morning about HB 9 Unlawful Access to Firearm by Minor, the bill was pulled from the House Judiciary hearing. The good new is, we’ve heard it was pulled so that the sponsors could work on incorporating the amendments that we outlined in the summary we posted for you! Once more, an excellent example of the impact of your activism. All of us, along with other gun violence prevention advocates around the state, may have saved this bill. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. Thank you for stepping up and helping with this effort!

Unfortunately, HB 75 Public Banking Act was tabled in House Commerce & Economic Development at 5:30 last night. Not dead yet, but not a good sign. Joining the Republicans to vote “yes” to table were Democrats D. Wonda Johnson and Antonio Maestas. Rep. Figueroa was absent and Democratic Reps. Doreen Gallegos, Linda Serrato, and Javier Martínez voted against tabling, ending with a 6:3 vote in favor of tabling. Martinez clearly stated during the hearing that he was supporting the bill because he’d had several meetings with constituents who strongly supported the bill. Another example of the power of your activism, though in this case that activism didn’t reach quite enough legislators. We’ll let you know if this bill might still have a chance once we hear more from the sponsor.

We have one new hearing on Wednesday to tell you about and two hearings today that we’ve told you about before and give you a reminder here.

Weds., Feb. 2, 9 a.m. Rm. 317, House Taxation & Revenue is scheduled to hear HB 11 Energy Storage System Tax Credit.
