1-30-22 Alert

Good Sunday Morning New Mexico Activists:

It’s going to be a busy week! We have one reminder and several new hearings to tell you about. Below you’ll find all the details you need to advocate for and participate in hearings for these bills:

  • Monday afternoon: HB 65 Housing Modernization Changes, SJR 8 Salaries for Public Officials (Paid Legislature), and HB 75 Public Banking.
  • Tuesday morning: HB 37 Community Energy Efficiency Dev. Block Grant
  • Tuesday afternoon we have HM 3 Paid Family & Medical Leave Task Force and HM 20 Study State-Level Public Utility Model (Public Power!).

We have some good news and some bad news about the outcomes of Saturday’s hearings: HB 132 Interest Rates for Certain Loans passed House Consumer & Public Affairs. Yay! SB 43 Prohibiting Life Without Parole for a Child passed Senate Health & Public Affairs. Yay! HM 22 Study Low-Income Basic Income passed House Health & Human Services. Yay! HJR 2 Environmental Rights (Green Amendment) was defeated (there is still the senate version, SJR 2), and HB 6 Clean Future Act passed in House Energy, Environment & Natural Resources. Boo! (Though it has some value, HB 6 needs lots of work for us to support it.)

One more thing before we get to upcoming hearings: we’ve heard that legislators are overwhelmed with email and may not be opening a lot of it. That makes calling even more important. When you do write an email be sure to put the message in the subject line, e.g. Please vote “yes” on HB 75. That way, they’ll get the message whether or not they open the email. Thanks!

And… we’ve fixed a glitch in our committee contact list – now you can simply click on a member’s email address on the list and an email window will open for you to write your note. (Or use the bulk email list to send a group email.)

Mon., Jan. 31, 1:30 pm, Room 309, House Judiciary is scheduled to hear HB 65 Housing Modernization Changes. In the wake of COVID, this kind of housing reform is needed more than ever! Please read the talking points in the link in the bill title, email committee members today, and call them Monday morning to urge them to support this bill. Also consider offering public comment by following the instructions below to join the hearing by Zoom. It’s exhausting but we know all of you are out there depending on us to provide this information so that you can act. We are honored to be in this effort with all of you!

In Solidarity and Hope,

Roxanne and Paul
